And it shatters but it's awesome stuff and I'm pretty sure I'm the only one who has it in this
county. Or so I'd bet. Aerogel shown here shaking the presidents hand. Is a fabulous substance I first encoutered when i was an early teen or something like
that. Maybe sooner. And it was at JPL's somewhat annual open house thing that I came across the marvelous substance. A substance so incredible I thought I'd never own it... ever.

And yet.. there it sits upon a black felt pad before me. Incredible.

Yes, I grew up in a town with rocket scientists. JPL was basically right in my back yard.. or well visible from my high school anyway. Some mornings I would stand out and watch the morning sun begin to cast light over the high tech complex. In fact the proximity to the place actually caused my school to be evacuated on 9/11.

I wonder if aerogel floats when you fill it's air cells with Helium or Hydrogen or something... I'd like to go and try that. Floating aerogel would be narly! ... Wait scratch that.. "air can not circulate through the 2 to 5nm spherical clusters" But if someone made the gel with encapsulated Hydrogen or Helium I wonder.... On that length scale it might be possible to witness QM effects of some sort. ... I wonder....
