Playa Mathematics

Robotics, a childhood dream.

It was sunny as I stood with Bekah at the
bus stop this afternoon. Wednesdays at 2 pm are quickly
becoming hang out with Bekah until the bus shows up time.
Today, the topic of men came up. And as we discussed it I brought up
the fact I've always heard the horror stories from females over
the years about what guys have done and so forth.

Bekah mentioned something about the way "guys play girls"
And so I asked Bekah something like, "Hey How does that
go exactly? What do those guys do?" She explained to me that the
males would exhibit just enough interest to get a girl's attention but
not act all overboard. Thus they are able to do the same thing with a lot
of females. Thereby, making it easier to court many females.

I paused and turned.
....
With a wrinkled brow I turned back and said, "Hey, its like their diversifying their market portfolio in order to reduce risk on their rate of return."
Blank stare. I can always tell by an expression when I happened to slip into an alternate language. This was one of those times.

I couldn't explain it to her at the time because my understanding of such matters was still somewhat foggy. But after a 10 minute consultation with Brigham and Houston's "Fundamentals of Financial Management" I gained a clearer picture. You see...

Playa Risk Diversification

Financial management has its quirks and a particularly quirky fellow is Harry Markowitz. Now, I'm not sure if Harry was a player but if he was it must have been the real reason he won the Nobel Prize in Economics back in 1990. You see, ol'Harry was the genius behind Modern portfolio theory.[1]

Essentially, the idea is to spread your investment out in order to reduce the risk of any one of your investment losing all your money. That is to say keep thems eggs out of that basket! Now how does this relate to players? What was going on in my brain as I was listening to Bekah?

Chris World can be a very strange place sometimes but in this case it only seemed natural that I would associate courting females with risk. My propensity to do math quickly took over and I spouted out the theory that playa's were akin to financial managers. But its clear right?

The male looking to attract the greatest possible return for his time wants to minimize the risk in his endeavors. So how do you do it? You spread out your investment of time among a set of females but never too much in one place. That way if times are rough with any one female your not too invested and there's a greater chance another female is more likely to be receptive to their advance.

Ugh. I really don't like playas. Writing the above paragraph was starting to make me feel sick. Do you have any idea how many stories I've heard from females over the years? Ack. Now, I remember why I don't participate in that world.

Anyway, mathematically I can write this as a summation of terms in which I multiply
the percent time invested by the probability return from that female. This mimics the Expected Portfolio Return equation. However, I notice that my analogy losses momentum when I compare the other half of the theory.

What is important here is not necessarily the distribution of return but the fact that if one return is poor then another return is more likely to be inversely related. That would be like saying if one female finds me disfavorable then suddenly another female is more likely to find me favorable. Since favorability among females isn't a factor I can sum over I can't say they're any relationships between entities.
It's sad really.

I was until recently so excited to think I was getting somewhere in understanding this phenomenon. What's needed is some sort of social currency in which to apply superposition principles. I suppose what I need to do is go off and think about the mathematics a bit more... you never know it just might be formally explainable after all.

[1] Sure he had help from William Sharpe,
but we all know there can really only
be one lead playa economist right?
